What to expect

Day 1: Johannesburg to Eswatini
  1. Eswatini (Swaziland)
    7h
Morning Arrival & Road Transfer: Arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport (preferably in the morning) and meet your guide. Depart eastbound toward the Kingdom of Eswatini, traveling through the expansive farmlands of Mpumalanga Province.

Iconic Roadstop: Stop at the famous Alzu Petroport—South Africa’s premier roadside haven. Enjoy comfortable amenities, grab a bite to eat, and catch your first glimpses of local wildlife roaming the adjacent fields.

Cultural Introduction: As you travel, your guide will introduce you to Swazi history, heritage, and local customs. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and learn about the kingdom.

Border Crossing & Sightseeing: Complete immigration and customs formalities at the Ngwenya Border Post. Once inside Eswatini, begin your tour with stops at the Ngwenya Glass Factory, the historic town of Mbabane, and the vibrant Mbabane Market.

Overnight: Check in at either Summerfield Botanical Garden & Exclusive Resort or Mantenga Lodge.
Day 2: Cultural Eswatini to the Drakensberg Foothills (Underberg)
  1. Underberg
    8m
Morning Culture & Heritage: After breakfast, explore the King Sobhuza II Memorial Park, followed by a visit to Swazi Candles. Proceed to the Mantenga Cultural Village for an immersive Swazi cultural performance featuring traditional music, dance, and storytelling. Conclude with a guided walk through the village to Mantenga Waterfall.

Scenic Journey through Zululand: Depart Eswatini and cross back into South Africa for the longest drive of the trip (approx. 6.5–7 hours). Watch the scenery shift from open savannah to the lush green hills of KwaZulu-Natal. Pass through historic Zululand, home to traditional homesteads (kraals) and grazing Nguni cattle.

Arrival in Underberg: Arrive at the foot of the Drakensberg mountain range, welcomed by crisp mountain air and sweeping views of the majestic rock walls known as the "Roof of Africa."
Day 3: The Iconic Sani Pass into the Kingdom of Lesotho
  1. Sani Pass
    7h
4WD Mountain Pass Ascent: Depart Underberg in a 4x4 vehicle to navigate the world-famous Sani Pass—one of Southern Africa’s most dramatic, high-altitude mountain roads.

The Roof of Africa: Stop for a drink at the Highest Pub in Africa (2,876 meters above sea level) at the top of the pass, followed by a brief visit to the Sani Top Church.

Scenic Highlands Drive: Continue deeper into Lesotho along high-mountain routes, stopping at Oxbow Lodge for lunch. Continue past the historical Liphofung Caves toward Leribe.
Day 4: Living History, Maseru & the Spectacular Maletsunyane Falls
  1. Maseru
    8h
Dinosaur Footprints & Kome Cave Dwellings: Depart Leribe to view ancient fossilized dinosaur footprints. Proceed to the Kome Caves—a set of mud-built cave dwellings still inhabited today, historically used as a hideout by the Basotho people during severe famines.

Maseru Lunch: Drive to Lesotho’s vibrant capital city, Maseru, for lunch at a local favorite, Ooh La La.

Maletsunyane Falls: Travel southeast into the highlands near Semonkong to view Maletsunyane Falls. Dropping 192 meters over dramatic basalt cliffs, it is one of Africa’s highest single-drop waterfalls.

Valley Descent & River Lodge: Travel through Semonkong Town and descend into a steep valley to reach your riverside retreat.
Day 5: Semonkong to Maseru & Return to Johannesburg
  1. Johannesburg
    8h
Morning Departure: Depart Semonkong and travel back through Maseru.

Border Crossing & Return: Exit Lesotho via the Maseru Bridge border post and continue the return journey to Johannesburg, completing your 5-day two-kingdoms expedition.
