What to expect

Yala National Park (යාල) is the second-largest and most visited national park in Sri Lanka, located along the coastline of the Indian Ocean. The park is home to 44 species of mammals, including the Sri Lankan Elephant, and boasts one of the highest leopard densities in the world. Block I of Yala is particularly famous for its leopards, with many individuals roaming the area.

The park’s elephant herd consists of approximately 100–150 individuals, and other iconic mammals include the Sri Lankan sloth bear, wild water buffalo, and leopard, all of which are considered threatened species. While water buffaloes are native to Sri Lanka, many populations contain genes from domestic or feral stock. Additionally, the elephant population in Yala fluctuates
