1. Basilica di Santo Stefano Rotondo al Celio
   20m
One of Rome’s most unusual and atmospheric churches, the Basilica of Santo Stefano Rotondo on the Caelian Hill offers a powerful reflection on death and martyrdom in early Christian history. Built in the 5th century and inspired by the circular design of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, its unique round structure creates a solemn and timeless space.

What makes this church especially striking are the dramatic 16th-century frescoes that cover its walls. These vivid paintings portray the martyrdom of early Christian saints, showing in powerful detail the suffering endured for faith. Created as a moral lesson for missionaries preparing to travel abroad, the images confront visitors with the reality of sacrifice and devotion.

Within the theme Rome and the Art of Death, Santo Stefano Rotondo reveals how early Christianity transformed death from a symbol of fear into a testimony of faith, courage, and spiritual victory.

Developed between the 2nd and 5th centuries AD, these vast subterranean galleries extend for several kilometers and served as a burial place for thousands of early Christians. Carved into the volcanic rock along the ancient Via Ardeatina, the catacombs preserve tombs, inscriptions, and symbolic frescoes reflecting a strong belief in resurrection and eternal life.

The Catacombs of Domitilla reveal how the first Christian communities transformed burial spaces into places of memory, faith, and hope beyond death.
3. Museum and Crypt of Capuchins Friars
   1h · Admission ticket included
The Capuchin Crypt offers one of the most striking and thought-provoking encounters with the theme of death in Rome. Located beneath the Church of Santa Maria della Concezione, this unique site will be visited at the end of the three-hour golf cart tour, when your driver-guide will drop you off at the entrance.

From there, you will have about one hour to explore the crypt independently with the official audio guide. The chapels are decorated with the bones of thousands of Capuchin friars, arranged in intricate patterns that create a powerful and symbolic space dedicated to reflection on life, death, and eternity.

Far from being macabre, the crypt expresses a deeply spiritual message. Through this extraordinary artistic display, the Capuchin friars sought to remind visitors of the fleeting nature of life and the universal destiny of death, perfectly reflecting the theme Rome and the Art of Death.
