It was an ancient day leisure center, which included a library, a gym and gardens. Built between 212 and 217 AD, during the reigns of Emperor Septimius Severus and his son Caracalla, the free spa was capable of hosting more than 1500 Romans at a time. The Baths of Caracalla remained in use until the 6th century when the Gothic War destroyed the most part, but the remains are still outstanding and very well preserved.

The Baths of Caracalla are one of the largest and best-preserved examples of an ancient spa complex in Rome built in AD 212The baths were fully functional in the 5th century and had a capacity of 1,600 people at a time. The daily capacity is thought to have been 6,000 to 8,000 bathers.
