For over three centuries (from the early 15th century until 1714), it served as the most important political, military, and cultural center of the historical principality of Wallachia.
Long before Bucharest became the permanent capital, Târgoviște was the seat of power for dozens of Romanian voivodes (princes), most notably Vlad the Impaler (Vlad Țepeș), who is historically linked to the site. Today, the ruins form the best-preserved medieval court complex in Romania and function as an open-air national museum.
