Overview

Join this self-guided walking tour of St Peter's Square, where ancient Egypt, Roman martyrdom, Baroque design, and papal power converge.

Start at Via della Conciliazione, walk toward the 3,900-year-old obelisk, and learn how Bernini's colonnade and its 140 saints were built to embrace visitors like the arms of the Church. Discover the hidden meridian line, Maderno's facade, Michelangelo's dome, and the Loggia of the Blessings before ending at the Holy Door.

Along the way, you'll:
* Examine ancient graffiti reading "Peter is here"
* Spot the Sistine Chapel chimney that signals a new pope
* Read the five bronze doors, including the Door of Death
* Study the Filarete Door's blend of martyrdom and empire
* Learn why the papal window draws crowds every Sunday

Slow down and see what most visitors only photograph.
