Overview

Berlin's Friedrichstraße might be a narrow thoroughfare by Berlin standards, but this historic street has seen the passage of kings, revolutionaries, artists, and spies throughout its colourful existence. On this self-guided audio tour, you'll discover the hidden stories of Northern Friedrichstraße, exploring a fascinating neighbourhood where cabaret entertainment, political intrigue, and everyday Berlin life have intertwined for centuries. You'll begin at Bahnhof Friedrichstraße, the historic railway station whose curved iron bridge spans the Spree River. As you walk, you'll weave through hidden courtyards, past the last surviving mulberry tree from early silk-making attempts, and along streets that once housed cabarets where Berlin's Golden Twenties roared. The tour ends at Bahnhof Friedrichstraße, perfectly positioning you to continue exploring central Berlin.

What to expect

Friedrichstrasse
Pass by

Stroll along one of Berlin's most storied thoroughfares, where the footsteps of kings, revolutionaries, cabaret performers, and Cold War spies have all left their mark on the cobblestones. Explore the layers of history embedded in this deceptively narrow street, from the Huguenot refugees who once transformed this neighbourhood to the dazzling excesses of the Weimar Republic's golden years.
Pass by

Admire this ornate iron bridge spanning the Spree River, its decorative Prussian eagles watching over one of Berlin's most atmospheric waterfront crossings. Stand here and take in the view that has barely changed since the 19th century, imagining the countless Berliners who have crossed these waters through revolution, war, and reunification.
Berliner Ensemble
Pass by

Step into the world of Bertolt Brecht at this legendary theatre, where he revolutionised German drama with bold political storytelling and radical stagecraft. Marvel at the famous rotating stage — still powered today by repurposed Soviet tank wheels — that continues to turn out groundbreaking performances in Brecht's spirit.
Pass by

Gaze up at this hulking World War Two air-raid shelter, whose brutal concrete exterior gives little hint of the extraordinary contemporary art collection housed within. Discover how this former bunker — later a Cold War warehouse and underground club — was transformed into one of Berlin's most unconventional private art spaces, topped by a stunning penthouse.
Deutsches Theater
Pass by

Walk past this grand historic stage, where a young Vladimir Lenin once sat in the audience watching a performance of Gerhart Hauptmann's The Weavers. Hear how that very production so enraged Kaiser Wilhelm II that he stormed out of the royal box — a delicious moment of theatre history that captures the explosive tensions of the era.
Pass by

Pause at this quietly significant address, where one of the last surviving mulberry trees stands as a living relic of Berlin's ambitious but short-lived silk industry. Explore the hidden courtyards nearby, where traces of the French Huguenot community who once breathed new life into this neighbourhood can still be found tucked between modern buildings.
Friedrichstadt-Palast
Pass by

Marvel at the world's largest revue stage, a glittering Art Deco-inspired entertainment palace that has dazzled Berlin audiences for decades. Discover the colourful history of this iconic venue, from its roots in the raucous cabaret culture of the Weimar Republic to its reinvention as East Berlin's showpiece theatre during the Cold War years.
Admiralspalast Berlin
Pass by

Admire the magnificent Art Deco facade of this remarkable building, which has reinvented itself more times than almost any other in Berlin. Explore its extraordinary journey from luxury thermal baths and ice-skating rink to political headquarters, entertainment venue, and celebrated concert hall — a building that has reflected every twist and turn of Berlin's turbulent history.
