Overview

You play a ghost hunter on your first night in the job, and Old Town Alexandria is your patch. The Questo app runs the hunt from your phone. It sends you down King Street and into the brick lanes around it, where ten ghosts are waiting to be caught.

Each of them died with something unfinished, and each comes with a puzzle: dating a senator's evidence folders, sorting a professor's artifacts by civilization, deciding the order a burning hotel should have been emptied in. Every ghost you catch gives up a clue about the one spirit that has been lying from the start.

The characters are fictional, made up for the game. The route is pure Old Town: the Torpedo Factory, Carlyle House, Gadsby's Tavern, Christ Church and the Potomac waterfront.

It's about 1.4 miles and takes around 90 minutes. Play whenever you like, day or night, on your own or with a group of up to 30. If you get stuck, hints are one tap away, and real people answer support messages around the clock.

What to expect

  1. Torpedo Factory Art Center
    11m
The hunt opens at the foot of King Street, on the Potomac waterfront. Once the app has you connected, it checks you have the sight with a strange ring of numbers. Then it leads you to the Torpedo Factory, where a bride poisoned three days before her wedding left a handwritten note with a few letters inked in red.
  2. Carlyle House
    11m
Up on Cameron Street, between Market Square and the old Carlyle House, you'll study a doctor's blood chart from the 1952 flu outbreak. Dr. Webb went three days without sleep, mixed up a girl's blood type and never forgave himself. Once you've found the right type, his ghost can rest.
  3. Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum
    11m
Back on King Street, steps from the old Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary, you'll go through an actor's script line by line. Jonathan Rivers died under a falling spotlight on the opening night of Midnight's Edge, and the numbers buried in his last speech are what set him free.
  4. Gadsby's Tavern Museum
    11m
Around the corner from Gadsby's Tavern, you'll piece together the case a senator never finished. Five evidence folders, each dated only against another, give you the year that matters. Margaret Chen died racing through the rain after a fake call about her daughter.
  5. Historic Christ Episcopal Church
    11m
On North Washington Street, across from Christ Church, a third-grade teacher is still marking registers. For three years after a pupil went missing, Sarah Martinez kept adding a child who didn't exist. You'll compare her class lists to work out who the real boy was.
  6. Alexandria History Museum at The Lyceum
    11m
Two ghosts wait between King Street and the Lyceum. You'll spot the fakes among an antique dealer's treasures, then deal with a librarian who fell from her ladder after midnight and left a closet locked. Something inside has been knocking ever since, and the key is hidden in one of her books.
  7. Athenaeum
    11m
The last three ghosts are the toughest. You'll sort a murdered professor's artifacts by civilization and date, figure out who should have been the last guest out of a burning hotel, and finish at the Athenaeum on Prince Street, near the church of a priest who vanished in 1984. People say his organ still plays when nobody's there.
  8. Waterfront Park
    13m
The case closes back by the river. You'll lay out the ten clue cards your ghosts have handed over and apply the one rule that matters: the Evil One is the ghost who lied. If you pick right, the Oracle destroys it and Old Town is quiet again.
